Hi folks-

Got the motor built, and am going through the process of mocking stuff up before taking the body off of the chassis. I've been staring like a monkey at the e-brake handle for a while, and thought I'd ask how this thing gets mounted.

Does someone have pics of the ebrake cockpit mounting for a 289 FIA car using Unique's parking brake kit?

If I read the posts right, Rick (Eliminator) produces the kit, is that correct?

Thanks!
Chris

I did the homework but Unique will supply the emergency brake kit for your particilar car.

Chris, make sure you locate the handle back far enough to have clearance at the roll bar, the 289 handle is shorter than the 427. The thick plate goes inside the cockpit and the thin backing plate goes inside the tunnel.

Thanks guys.

So given the way the plates are oriented, it looks like when the handle is in the "down" (brake off) position, it'll be angled up at about a 45* angle, and when it's in the "up" (brake on) position it's closer to 90*, right?

Brent - the link didn't work. Is it me, or is there another place to take a look?

Best,
Chris

your on the right track,
i'm pretty sure someone has posted pictures on this site,
be sure to secure the cable real good.
check clearances when you drill the hole for the brake handle linkage, you need some room between the trans and tunnel , so the trans dimensions will have influence on final location
this set-up works by pulling the driver side caliper lever with the cable and pushes on pass side with the cable housing when pressure is appied by pulling brake handle.the levers on the caliper can also be moved up and down for cable clearance

I think I just understood something that I didn't understand before. With the forward braced rollbar, is the e-brake handle supposed to be located far enough back so that the tip of the handle with the button on it doesn't intersect the fwd brace throughout its entire arc?

My thought up to now was to try to mount it forward, and hope that it doesn't scrape on the fwd brace through the arc, but if there's a proven way to do it, I'll just go that way.

Thanks,
Chris

If you have a Tremac, it is very tight fit. What trans do you have? If it is a Tremac I can send pictures.

Hi Justin-

I do have a Tremec. I mocked up the e-brake so that it's far enough back on the trans tunnel to miss the roll bar brace. As it sits, it's adjacent to the driveshaft underneath, not the body of the trans so I don't think I'll have clearance issues. We'll see in a few weeks when I get it put back together.

Next to the Driveshaft:confused: How is the fit for the passenger seat??

There is plenty of room between the seat and tunnel.

Hi Folks-

Just wanted to make SURE I've got this right :^). Below are two pics, one showing the engaged position, and the other in the disengaged position. This looks like the only way it'll mount correctly, but the handle being in such a high position when disengaged looks strange to me. Pics in the link below, they were too big to post.

Thanks,

Chris,
Have you tried that e-brake position with the roll bar in-place? Check out a pic I just posted in my chapter on interior (Chapter 21 - Working on Interior, Already?) which shows our e-brake installed with roll bar. We cut the bracket and pushed the e-brake way back into the corner of the tunnel and it gave us about an inch to down tube. Your roll bar may also be a bit different as well which would change the whole ball game.

Chris,
The disengaged and engaged position are correct just like the original cars.

Thanks much guys, that's what I needed to know.

Nolastyankee - yup, I've tested it out with the towntube in place, and I have enough clearance over the top of the brake handle release button. Thanks for the pointer to the pic, I'll check it out.

All the best,
Chris

Chris,
Another quick question...I noticed another set of Cobra pics in your picasaweb gallery...Did you have a FFR with some 'custom body work' done to the front end, and a 're-angled' Moto-Lita steering wheel?

Yup, both were delicately sculpted by an extremely talented guardrail in northern NJ last March. I have the steering wheel hanging from the wall in my office :^). Yeah, unfortunately it was totaled. I'm starting over with Unique 'cause I like the 289 FIA cars and the Weavers have an outstanding reputation.

Details on the wreck here:

It was a bummer 'cause my wife and I built the car, but when you do the first build there are so many things you'd do differently the second time that the opportunity to do another project was welcome.

All the best,
Chris

Damn, Chris, that's a heck of a story. Glad to hear you are OK.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but if you don't mind I'd be curious to understand how the insurance handled the whole thing, and if you still don't mind, who do you use. We're about to insure ours and I would like to consider someone like Hagerty or a specialist who understands the value of these rides.

Hi Brian - not a hijack at this point, I think the original question has been pretty well answered :^).

I insured the car (and another car, a v8-powered RX7) with Northeast Classic car insurance http://www.classiccarinsurance.com/. They were very good to deal with, I had a $500 deductible, and they paid the rest of what I had the car insured for without a fight. I'd rather they didn't total the car out, but as it stood, it was either accept that the car was totaled or make no claim at all. Given the damage to the car I didn't want to make a no-claim (not an easy decision) so I opted to let them total it and then I bid on the car when it finally went to auction via Copart. When I didn't win the auction this fall, I went ahead with the Unique build.

I have no idea what will happen if I go to insure another Cobra with them, but hopefully we'll see in a few months.

All the best,
Chris
